Dating a black man is not rocket science, they are after all, men. Dating him should be no different than dating anybody else - unless of course, you are a white woman. For some people, interracial dating is still an issue. There is still a lingering idea going around that if a woman dates outside her race, she should be expelled out of it. A big problem, isn't it?
First, it’s degrading and demeaning. But, more importantly, our neighbors are likely to call the cops if they hear a distressed, high-pitched scream coming from our apartments.
It is sad that every once in a while, racial issues still crop up in our so-called advanced society. Even if it is not outwardly spoken, it is definitely thought about. However, it is very important for all of us, as human beings in this time and age, to start accepting interracial dating. There should be no issues in this department, have we not, as humans, agreed that everyone is considered an equal? Or do we simply say those words and hide our true feelings so as to not seen so barbaric.
If you're a white woman who really wants to date a black man you met somewhere but you are concerned about the social implications, feeling doubtful about the whole idea is natural. The first thing you should do is consult your situation with your family and close friends. Him being black and you being white should not be a problem, however if you feel you might harbor adverse reactions within your circle, it is best that you ask him about it first.
When the two of you finally agree on a date, be honest with yourself. Don't push yourself if you think it's not a good idea. Don't go out of your way just to prove something, either. Agreeing on an interracial date should not be about you proving yourself to someone. It should be about you looking at the possibility that the person in front of you is the one whom you would like to be with.
Date a black guy like you would date any other person. Let him treat you with respect and vice-versa. Follow your usual rules when dating. Just hold on. Sooner or later, interracial dating is going to be one of the most natural things in this world.
Rudeness from strangers on public transportation or in restaurants. Conversations between lovers about race that expose conflicting worldviews and experiences. Condemnation from friends and family who disapprove of interracial relationships. These are all examples of how race issues create a lot of stress and anxiety in, and bring baggage to, interracial relationships. Love is strong, but it takes more than love to overcome the obstacles that can stand in an interracial couple’s way.
You have to be open to addressing the weirdness head on, together. Don't just sweep issues under the carpet and assume that love will conquer all.
